It is so frustrating to watch Obama stand before a crowd and call Governor Romney a liar at the top of his lungs. I just want to stand up and yell “LIAR!” back at my television. Knowing that if I did that my children would stop wondering if I was a little crazy and now KNOW that I am a lot crazy. Luckily I have the outlet of this blog to detail my frustration. I have spoken to some very senior reporters who tell me that they have never seen anything like this election in that both sides seem genuinely confident that they are going to win. Well, Obama walked off of the stage at the first debate thinking that he had won, so delusion knows no bounds.
Here are just a few highlights from the “Lies That Are Obama.”
1. Obama Claims Current Romney Obama Ad About Chrysler Is A Lie - TRUTH – The Romney ad is the truth and the Obama attack is the lie.
The Dispute - The Romney campaign over the weekend released an ad in Ohio claiming President Barack Obama “took GM and Chrysler into bankruptcy, and sold Chrysler to Italians who are going to build Jeeps in China. Mitt Romney will fight for every American job.” Just so that there is no confusion, here is the ad:
“You got folks who work at a Jeep plant who have been calling their employers worried, asking ‘Is it true that our jobs are being shipped to China,’ ” Obama said at a rally at the Franklin County Fairgrounds this morning. “The reason they are making these calls is because Gov. Romney ran an ad that says so. Except it’s not true. Everybody knows it’s not true. The car company themselves told Gov., Romney to knock it off.” (Detroit Free Press)
In an October 22, 2012 press release, Fiat, the new owner of Chrysler stated:
Fiat SpA (F), majority owner of Chrysler Group LLC, plans to return Jeep output to China and may eventually make all of its models in that country, according to the head of both automakers’ operations in the region.
Fiat is in “very detailed conversations” with its Chinese partner, Guangzhou Automobile Group Co. (2238), about making Jeeps in the world’s largest auto market, said Mike Manley, chief operating officer of Fiat and Chrysler in Asia. Chrysler hasn’t built Jeeps there since before Fiat took control in 2009.
In addition to sending some Jeep production to China (unclear at this time whether any of the Chinese constructed Jeeps would then be exported back to the United States), Fiat has also announced that due to its underutilized European manufacturing plants, Fiat will begin manufacturing a number of Chrysler models in Italy and those models will be exported to the United States. (Fiat Statement)
Who Is Lying? - OBAMA
Let’s look at the language from the Romney campaign ad again : President Barack Obama “took GM and Chrysler into bankruptcy, and sold Chrysler to Italians who are going to build Jeeps in China.”
1. President Obama took GM and Chrysler into bankruptcy – No one disputes that GM and Chrysler were taken into bankruptcy by the Obama Administration, in fact Obama heralded that as one of his achievements during the debate.
2. Chrysler was sold to the Italians – Again, this is not in dispute in that Chrysler was bought by Fiat – although I would argue that Chrysler was given away and not sold.
3. Fiat is going to build Jeeps in China – Again, no one disputes this. Fiat has plainly acknowledged this in repeated press releases. In addition, Fiat has also said that it is going to build jeeps and other models in Europe further supporting Governor Romney’s claim that the sale of Chrysler will have the net effect of more overseas jobs that might have been able to stay at home.
The Obama camp, as shown in the President’s comments above, plainly accuses Governor Romney of lying with NO qualification. Some of the mainstream media (Obama’s propaganda arm) has argued that Romney’s ad implies that some U.S. jobs will be moving to China. First, this is not at all what the President and Vice President are saying – they are saying that Romney’s ad is a direct lie. Second, since it is undisputed that Jeeps will be manufactured in China using Chinese workers it is completely true that those workers will be doing jobs that could have been done by Americans.
I have had a significant amount of offline discussion about this so let me try to provide one more example. The concepts presented in this example are completely correct, the numbers are merely to explain the concept. Let’s say that there are currently 10,000 jobs in Ohio for workers building Jeeps. World demand for Jeeps has increased so Fiat, the current owner of the Jeep brand, needs to hire 5,000 more workers. Fiat has three choices – they can add the jobs in Ohio, they can add the jobs in China or they can add the jobs in Italy. Fiat has decided to add the jobs in China and Italy instead of Ohio. It is true that none of the 10,000 current jobs in Ohio are at risk, but another 5,000 workers could have been added in Ohio that instead will be shipped overseas. Don’t know how to explain it any simpler than that.
Press Coverage – I got at least 75 links in without finding a single story that actually looked at the truth of the claims. All 75 of those first links were headlined by quotes from Obama/Biden about the “outrageous” Romney lies. Sigh.
