What actually happened was that Democrats booed the adoption of a resolution including God in the DNC Platform - pretty shocking and sad. After stinging from shocked and negative public reaction and negative media coverage, the Dems were trying to backtrack from earlier actions where, for the first time, the DNC had left God completely out of their platform. In contrast in 2004, God appeared in the Democratic Party Platform seven times.
The attached video is actually pretty funny. In response to the strong public backlash regarding the removal, a proposal was made to reinsert a reference to God and also to reinsert language about Jerusalem being the capital of Israel (which had similarly been removed with similar public outcry). Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa came to the podium to put the an amendment to the Democratic Platform to the convention floor knowing that it would take a 2/3 vote to pass. Evidently Democratic leadership didn’t properly read their delegates because the “Nos” were more numerous and louder than the “Ayes” when first put to the vote (which means with 2/3 required the measure clearly failed). Mayor Villaragaiso was clearly taken aback by the reaction and put it to another vote, this time s p e a k i n g v e r y s l o w l y. If anything the “Nos” grew even louder. Villaragaiso looks around for help and a party leader walks up to him and says “you just have to let them act how they are going to act.” Not wanting to let it go, Villaragaiso puts it to a vote for yet another time. This vote sounds almost identical to the second vote which I estimate to be about 60% no votes (nowhere near the needed 2/3). A clearly shocked Villaragaiso looks around again for help before pronouncing “The Chair determines that the “Ayes” have it and the motion carries.” Villaragaiso’s prouncement is met with loud and resounding boos.
How far have we come from the Constitution which clearly says “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion”? http://www.archives.gov/exhibits/charters/constitution.html The fears of the founding fathers was that one religion would be set up as a national religion to the exclusion of other religions – NOT that GOD had no place in our lives. Yesterday’s behavior at the DNC is just another example of how the politically correct want to chip away at our basic freedoms under the guise of twisted “tolerance.”
